“Become more comfortable with uncertainty and less comfortable with certainty.”
Dr. Jon Slaughter, M.D.
Welcome. I am an integrative psychiatrist (see integrative approach page) practicing in New York City. I am a board certified psychiatrist with over 10 years of experience in the field of psychiatry. I received my medical degree from Georgetown Medical School and completed my residency in psychiatry through the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Division. Upon completion of my training, I began treating patients in my private practice.
Each of us is a unique human being with a vast array of individual experiences which have shaped our innate self to create the person that we are today. The hope is that each person can always function well in their personal and work lives while experiencing a degree of joy in these areas. In reality, life invariably presents us with challenges that may cause pain and difficulty. As a result, when people who may have a genetic predisposition experience such stressors, they can develop symptoms consistent with any number of psychiatric conditions. This is where I can help.
My approach is one based on a wellness model. While it is necessary to target the symptoms that lead someone to treatment, I think it is a disservice to focus solely on a person’s symptoms and illness. In reality, people are much more than the symptoms that they may be experiencing. Each person is a human being with strengths, talents, interests, a vast array of experiences, and a support network of others involved in their life. I feel the most effective way to help a person begin to heal is by focusing on their strengths and assisting them to harness their available resources, while treating the symptoms that led them to seek treatment.
As a result, after a thorough assessment, I help my patients through formulating a plan to begin to target the symptoms that led them to seek treatment. At the same time I begin to address all areas of a person’s life. I inquire about their personal relationships, work life and career, personal health (to include diet, exercise, medical health), and personal development. After doing so, I help them to develop a plan to identify specific goals in each of these areas. By doing so, I believe they can begin to improve the overall quality of their life. Feel free to contact me to set up an initial consultation.
There are a wide array of therapies and approaches that can be utilized in developing a specific plan to treat an individual’s symptoms. Psychotherapy, medications, and complementary and alternative therapies all can be very effective in reducing symptoms. Through my initial assessment I determine which combination may be most effective for each individual. As treatment goes on, I continue to modify the treatment plan to employ the most effective therapies.
